Breed smarter in Palworld 1.0 — build the farm, bake cake, pick parents, and hatch the Pal you want. Open the calculator to get the shortest known path within 4 steps from your selected starting species (steps may require catching a partner), or read on for the full mechanics with a worked example.
How the Breeding Farm Works
Breeding happens in one of two structures: the classic Breeding Farm or the Ancient Hatchery added in 1.0. The Breeding Farm is an Ancient Technology unlock at tier 19 (costs 2 ancient technology points) and is built from 10 Wooden Board, 20 Stone, and 50 Fiber — matching the Palworld Wiki Breeding Farm reference.
Once built, breeding takes three things:
- One male and one female Pal assigned to the farm. For breedable species meeting the one-male-one-female condition, breeding the same species yields the same species (A + A = A). For breedable, opposite-gender pairs of different species with no special combo, the rank-average formula below decides the child — catch-only / event species can never be parents or children.
- Cake in the farm's chest. Without cake, the pair will never produce an egg — see How to Make Cake for the exact recipe and the new 1.0 cake types.
- Time. With default settings the pair produces an egg roughly every 5 minutes. Breeding does not drain the parents' SAN, so they can keep working or resting as normal. The Monitoring Stand work-speed setting changes how fast eggs appear.
Each egg is picked up from the farm and hatched in an Egg Incubator; incubation time depends on the egg's size and how well the incubator's surroundings match the egg's element. Heaters and coolers around the incubator shorten the wait for Fire and Ice eggs respectively.
The Rank Formula, With a Worked Example
When no special combo applies, the child is decided by a hidden breeding rank (Palworld Wiki 1.0 table; rank-eligible species span 10–2970) — the lower the rank, the rarer and stronger the Pal. The game averages the two parents' ranks and picks the rank-eligible Pal whose rank is closest to that average:
child rank ≈ floor((rankA + rankB + 1) / 2) — then snap to the nearest rank-eligible Pal.
Worked example (1.0 ranks): breed Lamball (rank 1470) with Jormuntide (rank 310). The target is floor((1470 + 310 + 1) / 2) = 890, and the rank-eligible Pal closest to 890 is Melpaca (rank 890) — an exact hit. This is exactly what our calculator computes, and every Pal page shows both the rank and the full parent table.
Two consequences matter for planning:
- You can never breed a Pal rarer than your rarest parent. The average always sits between the two ranks, so repeated averaging can only approach your best parent, never beat it. The only way past this ceiling is a special combo.
- You can grind toward a rare Pal. Breed the rare parent with its own offspring: each generation halves the remaining distance. This is what the calculator's shortest path automates — it finds the fewest of these halving steps from the roster you actually own, up to 4 steps.
When two rank-eligible Pals are equally close to the target rank, the one with the lower wiki Index No. wins (the game's internal ordering), so ties are deterministic and match in-game. A Pal flagged “Eligible Child: No” on the Wiki — every boss-tier legend (Jetragon, Grizzbolt, Orserk, Faleris, Paladius, Necromus…) and most subspecies — is never the rank-average result; it comes only from same-species breeding or its listed special combo. Same-species pairs of breedable species produce the same species (A + A = A). Catch-only / Terraria collab Pals are never parents or children in this calculator.
Special Combos Override Everything
The 80 special parent combinations in Palworld 1.0 bypass the rank formula entirely and always produce a fixed child — most of them subspecies like Incineram Noct or Mossanda Lux. If a pair is on the special list, the rank average is irrelevant, no matter how far apart the parents are. Special combos are also the only route to children rarer than both parents, which is why the calculator checks them first.
One 1.0 change to know: boss-tier Pals are now same-species only — high-tier names like Jetragon, Grizzbolt, Orserk and Faleris are flagged “Eligible Child: No”, so no cross-species or special combination produces them; you must breed two of the same species. This is reflected in the current breeding data — any guide from 2024 claiming otherwise is outdated. See the full 1.0 changes guide for the wider rework context.
Gender Rules & Exceptions
For normal rank-formula breeding, gender only matters as "one of each" — the pair itself is gender-agnostic, so A + B = B + A. One special pair is gender-sensitive, and this calculator models pairs only (no gender field), so it lists both outcomes:
- Katress + Wixen — a female Wixen + male Katress yields Wixen Noct; a female Katress + male Wixen yields Katress Ignis. Both are verified 1.0 special combos and appear on each variant's page. The calculator cannot tell which one you will get without knowing the genders, so breed the right-sex pair deliberately.
Catch-only / event Pals (Terraria collab — internal Yakushima IDs: Eye of Cthulhu, slimes, Enchanted Sword, Cave Bat, etc.) can never appear as a child at all.
Cake: The Cost Per Egg
Every breeding cycle consumes one cake from the chest and yields one egg — about 5 minutes per egg at default speed. That makes cake the real bottleneck of any breeding project: a 4-step path to a Legendary means at least 4 cakes just for the chain (minimum, excludes gender retries, passive rerolls, and incubation), and far more if you are mass-producing for passives. The cake guide lists the exact recipe — 5 Flour, 8 Red Berries, 7 Milk, 8 Egg, 2 Honey per cake — and the Ranch setup (Chikipi, Mozzarina, Beegarde) that produces every ingredient passively. Community reports for 1.0: Vegetable Cake may produce two eggs per cake — treat site cake budgets as a lower bound and bake extra.
Mutations & Alpha Eggs (New in 1.0)
Per the Palworld Wiki breeding mechanics, bred eggs have a small chance to mutate: the egg hatches into a rarer Pal than the parents' formula predicts, always with 4 passive skills (at least 2 Tier-4, one a mutation-exclusive skill such as Babysitter or Immortality), Condensation Level 2, high stat potential, and guaranteed Alpha. The Extravagant Vegetable Cake raises mutation odds (community-reported ~1% base, ~3% with the cake). Bred eggs also have a slight independent chance of hatching as an Alpha Pal. These rolls are random — plan for the formula result and treat mutations as upside; verify the rate in your build.

Shortest Known Path (≤4 Steps) vs Parent Lookup
Shortest known path finds the minimal breeding chain within 4 steps, starting from your selected species (up to 20 Pals, depth 4). Steps may require catching a partner Pal, and gender, quantity and passive inheritance are not modeled. Parents Lookup answers Parents → Child or Target → Parents directly. Want specific traits on the child? Use the Passives guide and the Passive Planner — and remember the cake guide for the ingredient pipeline that keeps the farm running.
